Letter from the Executive Director

Dear Members and Friends,

We are thrilled to report that in August, the Recycling Market Development Board awarded $500,000 in grants to support Indiana’s recycling infrastructure. As you’ve read here in recent months, the IRC worked with several stakeholders, including Senators Breaux and Kenley, to secure the release of these previously-frozen funds. According to administration officials, this was a one-time release of $500,000, therefore we will continue to support the use of this fund which incentivizes new green jobs and a more sustainable environment for Indiana.

We are also excited to tell you about our upcoming fall fundraiser, Mobius – A Celebration of Recycling with the IRC on November 6. This will be a fun, elegant evening and we hope to see you there.

Finally, we recently kicked-off our America Recycles Day Jr/High School video contest. Please share this exciting opportunity with all of the middle & high school students and teachers you know and don’t forget to mention the cash prizes and awards ceremony! We are looking forward to once again tapping the talent and creativity of Hoosier students to convey an import environmental message – that recycling is one of the easiest ways to reduce your carbon footprint.

Details about these new developments and much more is included below. As always, thank you for your support as we continue the IRC’s important work to advance source reduction, reuse, recycling and composting activities in Indiana!

Mobius – A Celebration of Recycling with the IRC

You’re invited!

The IRC’s fall fundraiser will take place on Saturday, November 6th at the University Place Hotel & Conference Center in Indianapolis. Please plan to join us there!

Grants Announced at RMDB Meeting

Four Indiana companies will receive grant dollars intended to help attract recycling industry jobs to the state. The funding represents the first grants made since the state froze the board’s funds in late 2008 to help offset state revenue shortfalls.

Bruce Burrow, Chairman of the Recycling Market Development Board (RMDB) said, “The Indiana Recycling Coalition, along with Senators Breaux and Kenley and RMDB members deserve credit for persuading officials in April to free up the funding that will assist companies to either expand operations or relocate to Indiana, thus potentially creating over 200 new full time jobs.”

Congratulations, Carey!

The IRC’s own Executive Director, Carey Hamilton, has signed on to serve as co-chair of the Super Bowl 2012 Sustainability Committee. We know that Carey’s work in this capacity will advance the mission of the IRC and we are thrilled that she will be leading the effort to make the 2012 Super Bowl the most sustainable Super Bowl in history!

In addition, Carey was recently selected to be a member of the highly competitive Stanley K. Lacy Executive Leadership Series.

IRC On the Road

Thank You Strategic Materials!

Thanks to Strategic Materials, the IRC is now publicized at recycling locations across central Indiana. Strategic generously funded the purchase of large IRC stickers that are now located on Strategic’s glass collection bins and are available for other recycling bins around the state. Thank you Dean Schmuhl and Strategic!

—– IRC interns Don Brown and Andrew Pappas staffed the John Mayer concert as a part of Reverb to promote the IRC. During the day, Don had the opportunity to rub elbows with the Taco Bell Taco & Hot Sauce mascots. Lesson learned: promoting the IRC can really put you in touch with some important people!

DEA Tox Drop

Turn in your unwanted or expired meds!

In the next several weeks, Hoosiers will have the opportunity to safely and anonymously dispose of their unwanted medications.

On September 25, the DEA will coordinate a collaborative effort with state and local law enforcement agencies to remove potentially dangerous controlled substances from our nation’s medicine cabinets. National Take-Back Day collection activities will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at sites around the country. Click here for more information, including listings of collection sites and items accepted and not accepted.

Can less consumption be good for business?

Last month, Business For Social Responsibility, a not-for-profit association of companies whose mission it is to promote a just and sustainable world, recently published a report called “The New Frontier in Sustainability: The Business Opportunity in Tackling Sustainable Consumption.” The report was made in an effort to encourage business leaders to think about what sustainable consumption might look like.

The report addresses whether business opportunities exist for companies that give poor and middle class people what they want in a sustainable way. The report points toward a few:

– In fast growing emerging markets, companies can create “different ways to improve well being” that enable “the leapfrogging of resource-intensive infrastructure in favor of light materials and digital services.” – Sustainable consumption also creates market opportunities for companies that use information technology to deliver positive outcomes for consumers.” Examples: Smart buildings, smart homes, a smart grid. – Companies have an opportunity to appeal to “the rising generation of consumers” who are “likelier to favor products whose sustainability attributes are clear.” Click here to read the report.
