Letter from the IRC Board President
Members and Friends,
2011 is already off to a great start for the IRC. Here are a few of the highlights.
Alcoa Grant At the end of 2010, the IRC received a major Alcoa Foundation grant designed to increase public space recycling across the state. Read about this exciting new program below.
Strategic Plan For the last four months, the IRC board has been engaged in creating a new strategic plan for the next three years. The plan will help the IRC focus on strengthening the organization so that the IRC can continue to further the mission of increasing waste reduction, reuse, recycling and composting in Indiana. The strategic plan was approved by the board during the January 2011 board meeting and will be a guide for the IRC over the next three years.
Keep America Beautiful Board Election The IRC’s Executive Director Carey Hamilton has been elected to the board of Keep America Beautiful (KAB). Carey’s election to KAB’s board will undoubtedly strengthen the IRC’s partnership with KAB, which is already bringing significant knowledge and resources to the IRC in support of our mission. KAB’s announcement can be viewed here. Congratulations Carey!
New IRC Board Members In the 4th quarter of 2010, the IRC board selected three new members. Welcome to Dan Gajus, Area Manager for Republic Services, Tony Burrus, Allen County Solid Waste Management District Director and Shelby Walker, City of Bloomington Sanitation Director.
22nd Annual IRC Conference The date for this year’s conference is rapidly approaching. This year, the annual conference will be held May 10th through 12th at the Hilton Indianapolis North. Hope to see you there!
Thanks to everyone who helped make 2010 another great year for the IRC. With your help, we are looking forward to continuing the important work of the IRC.
Many thanks,
Mark

State House Update
The Indiana legislature is in full swing with over two dozen new legislators learning the ropes and over 1,200 bills proposed for consideration. The IRC is tracking several bills of interest dealing with issues such as the handling of unused medicine, disposable bag fees, recycled newsprint incentives, tweaks to the electronics recycling law, major funding changes for solid waste management districts and more. We will keep you posted on major developments and we will let you know if and when your contact with a legislator could help a pro-recycling bill move forward or help an anti-recycling bill to be shelved.

The IRC has received a $124,252 grant from Alcoa to create a public space recycling bin grant program. The majority of the grant will be utilized to provide recycling bins for public venues including college and university athletic venues, publicly-owned athletic venues, publicly-owned golf courses, state parks and municipal parks across the state. Other funds will be utilized to provide recycling for the 2012 Superbowl. IRC Executive Director Carey Hamilton serves as co-chair of the Superbowl’s sustainability committee.
“Approximately 30 percent of beverage containers in the U.S. are consumed away from home and currently the majority of these containers are not recycled due in large part to a lack of public space recycling infrastructure,” said Hamilton. “The IRC has made public space recycling across the state a priority, so we are thrilled to receive support from the Alcoa Foundation for this program.”
The grant was formally announced at a press conference on January 19th, at which several lawmakers, including Senator Beverly Gard, were in attendance.
We are very excited to support public space recycling around the state! Please encourage eligible entities to apply for a grant. The application and more information may be found by clicking here.
Representatives from Alcoa, the IRC, the Super Bowl Host Committee and the legislature attended the January 19, State House press conference held to announce the grant.
IRC Supports RecycleMania!
The IRC is helping raise awareness of RecycleMania, a friendly national competition between college and university recycling programs to promote waste reduction activities on campuses. Currently, there are eight colleges and universities in Indiana registered to participate. We’d love to see more registered this year!
Toward that end, the IRC will work with our partners at RecycleMania to host an Indiana-only competition. The winners of the Indiana competition will be invited to an award ceremony during a luncheon at the IRC’s annual conference and exhibition in Indianapolis May 10-12th.
The official start date for the competition is February 6. If you know of a college or university that should participate, or if you want more information about RecycleMania, check out their website.

As you’ve read here in recent months, the IRC worked with several stakeholders, including Senators Breaux and Kenley, to secure the release of these previously-frozen funds. According to administration officials, this was a one-time release of $500,000, therefore we will continue to support the use of this fund which incentivizes new green jobs and a more sustainable environment for Indiana.<br /> <br />We are also excited to tell you about our upcoming fall fundraiser, Mobius – A Celebration of Recycling with the IRC on November 6. This will be a fun, elegant evening and we hope to see you there. <br /> <br />Finally, we recently kicked-off our America Recycles Day Jr/High School video contest. Please share this exciting opportunity with all of the middle & high school students and teachers you know and don’t forget to mention the cash prizes and awards ceremony! We are looking forward to once again tapping the talent and creativity of Hoosier students to convey an import environmental message – that recycling is one of the easiest ways to reduce your carbon footprint.<br /> <br />Details about these new developments and much more is included below. <br />As always, thank you for your support as we continue the IRC’s important work to advance source reduction, reuse, recycling and composting activities in Indiana!<br /><br />Carey Hamilton<br />Executive Director</p> <p><a class=”center” href=”index.php?page=august-2010/”>Back to top^</a> <img title=”Large Line Break” src=”/uploads/images/Newsletter/hr.gif” alt=”Large Line Break” width=”348″ height=”28″ /></p> <h2><a name=”New Member Welcome”></a>Welcome newest members of the IRC!</h2> <p> </p> <div style=”text-align: center;”>Ed Mahern<br /> Quality Printing <br />Teachers’ Treasures <br />Yellowbook<br /> <br />And Thank You To Our Returning Members!<br /> <br />Steven Boggs <br />Lori Kaplan <br /> <a title=”Washington, Indiana” href=”http://www.washingtonin.us/” target=”_blank”>The City of Washington, Indiana</a></div> <p><br />Listing in the “New & Returning Members” section is voluntary.
