Letter from the Executive Director

Dear Members and Friends,

Staff has been busy in recent months hosting another successful conference and exhibition, implementing the Alcoa/IRC Public Space Recycling Bin Grant Program, working to make indianarecycles.org the best on-line recycling resource for Hoosiers and re-engaging the IRC advocacy committee in preparation for the legislative summer study review of Solid Waste Management Districts.

Additional hot topics at the IRC include:

Economics

This spring I attended a Glass Packaging Institute award presentation with Senator Richard Lugar, who was recognized for his commitment to ensuring Indiana’s ongoing leadership in the manufacturing and recycling of glass containers. I took the opportunity to talk with the Senator about the economic benefits of recycling and during our conversation he expressed the need to educate Hoosiers about the positive economic impact of recycling to Indiana’s economy. The IRC couldn’t agree more! I’m glad to report that as a result of our recent strategic planning process, the IRC is on track to better communicate this powerful message in the coming year.

Composting

The IRC will launch a food waste composting dialogue later this summer, bringing together interested parties to determine what changes are needed to increase food waste composting in Indiana and how the IRC can help facilitate that change. Please send me an email to carey@indianarecycling.org if you would like to receive information about this effort.

New Board Members

At the IRC’s annual meeting on May 11, we recognized new board members Stacey Boggs (Abitibi-Bowater), Aaron Brown (Community Recycling Solutions), Deanna Dennison (Crossroads Industrial Services) and State Representative Mary Ann Sullivan. Welcome to our newest board members!

Annual Report

Finally, please take a moment to review the IRC’s 2010 annual report. We are proud of all that was accomplished in 2010 and we thank you for your continued support of the important work we do to advance waste reduction, reuse, recycling and composting in Indiana!

Sincerely,

Carey Hamilton

2011 IRC Conference Highlights

The 2011 IRC conference once again provided attendees with a treasure trove of great ideas, plentiful networking opportunities and new information about recycling. A big thank you to the more than 250 exhibitors, speakers and attendees who helped to make the conference a great success! You can see a few photos from the conference here.

Conference highlights included:

– Keynote presentation by Kim Jeffery, President and CEO of Nestle Waters North America, who discussed his support for producer responsibility legislation;

– A tour of three sustainable facilities in downtown Indy;

– A session titled, “Engaging Millenials” that helped participants understand and find effective means of communicating with 20-25 year olds;

– Over 45 exhibitors;

– A lovely opening night reception in the atrium of a nearby “green” church;

– Special Event/Public Space Recycling session featuring Dr. Mike Lynch of NASCAR, Marianne Peters of the Marshall County Blueberry Festival, and Heather Grisham of the Indianapolis Zoo that received rave reviews;

– The Recyclemania Awards; and

– Another successful live and silent auction to benefit the IRC!

Session presentations are available here. Check back again soon as sessions are still being added.

IRC Receives Grant Funding from Whole Foods Market

The IRC was pleased to be selected as one of only four recipients of a Whole Foods Market Community Support Day (CSD). Community Support Days are designated days throughout the year when a total of 5% of one day’s sales are donated to a local non-profit organization. To be considered for the program, organizations must have a large, dedicated support base. Only four non-profits are chosen each year, and it is in large part thanks to our dedicated members, YOU, that the IRC was chosen, so THANK YOU for making this possible! The IRC was able to receive 5% of the day’s sales on Wednesday, April 6 at the Whole Foods Market locations in Nora (Indianapolis) and Carmel. The IRC was awarded $3,820 that will support the IRC’s work to advance waste reduction, reuse, recycling and composting in Indiana. Thank you Whole Foods Market and all our loyal friends and members who made this support possible!

Public Space Recycling Bin Grant Winners Announced

The IRC has announced the winners of its Public Space Recycling Bin Grant program. Thirty public venues across the state will receive recycling bins with the goal of increasing beverage container recycling in public spaces.

Click here to view a press release of the announcement which includes the names of all thirty winners and additional information about the program. Thanks to the Alcoa Foundation for its generous support of this program and congratulations to all grant recipients!

Planning has begun for America Recycles Day

The IRC will, again in 2011, host its ARD Video Contest. A theme will be announced soon, however, interested parties may mark October 18, 2011 on their calendars as the due date for video submissions. Contact Monica Brase for more information.

RecycleMania Award Winners Announced

Another highlight of the recent IRC conference was the RecycleMania awards ceremony. RecycleMania is a national college and university recycling challenge. This year, the IRC partnered with RecycleMania to host the first-ever competition between Indiana’s participants.

Matt McKenna, President and CEO of Keep America Beautiful and Stacy Wheeler, Co-founder of RecycleMania, co-presented the awards. To see the complete listing of winners and to read more about the competition, click here.

Good News From The 2010 Video Contest!

Back in November 2010, Greenfield Middle School was a first-place winner in the IRC’s “Curb Your Carbon Footprint” video contest, held in conjunction with America Recycles Day. The school used a large portion of the winnings to re-landscape a portion of the school’s property. They chose native plants that will be both beautiful and good for the planet. Students from the class that made the video provided the manual labor for the landscaping project. Congratulations GMS!

Lend-A-Bin Program Announced

Applications Due June 30

The Anheuser-Busch Foundation and Keep America Beautiful (KAB) have partnered to establish the “Lend-A-Bin Grant Program.” Their efforts support local organizations seeking to provide recycling opportunities at special events and promote the habit of recycling “on-the-go” in their communities. Applications are now open to participate in this program.

Organizations that receive bin grants will be responsible for identifying local recycling opportunities and lending the bins to others in their communities.

An “I ROGO” (Recycle on the Go) social media presence will accompany the grant program and organizations that borrow the recycling bins will be given “I ROGO” campaign materials that will direct users to Facebook. Organizations with the most chatter about Recycling On The Go will receive prizes.

Applications must be registered online at http://lendabingrant.org/ by June 30, 2011.

Applications are open to IRC members, state and local government agencies and KAB affiliates. KAB will contact grantees in July 2011 to offer guidance, confirm their needs, and solidify bin selection. Suppliers will deliver bins directly to the recipients throughout the summer.

KAB offers FREE recycling bins through the Dream Machine Initative

Apply Today!

Keep America Beautiful (KAB) has partnered with PepsiCo and Waste Management (WM) to make free recycling bins available to local community groups through the Dream Machine initiative. Non-profits, government agencies, schools and other organizations can submit proposals to receive potentially hundreds of bins from a selection of different styles.

The full details of this offer are listed online at http://www.kab.org/dreammachine.

The IRC & The Indianapolis Art Center Partner To Teach Hoosiers How To “Curb Their Carbon Footprints” By Recycling

IRC staff provided information about what our carbon footprints are and how we can reduce them by, among other things, recycling! Partcipants took a quiz to determine the size of their carbon footprints then created artistic, scale models of their own footprints. They also learned more about HOW recycling reduces our carbon footprints and came up with personal goals for increasing their recycling and other carbon-reducing activities. Check out this sample piece!

Save the Date AND Save Money!

The Resource Recycling Conference will be held in downtown Indianapolis August 17 & 18, 2011. IRC members will receive a $20 discount on regular registration, so make sure you take advantage of this opportunity. For more information about the conference, including exciting session topics, click here. For information about membership in the IRC, click here.

As you’ve read here in recent months, the IRC worked with several stakeholders, including Senators Breaux and Kenley, to secure the release of these previously-frozen funds. According to administration officials, this was a one-time release of $500,000, therefore we will continue to support the use of this fund which incentivizes new green jobs and a more sustainable environment for Indiana.

We are also excited to tell you about our upcoming fall fundraiser, Mobius – A Celebration of Recycling with the IRC on November 6.
