Letter from the Executive Director

Members and Friends,

As we all look forward to a well-deserved spring, I’m glad to be able to share some exciting announcements from the IRC.

First, in late February we were thrilled to launch Indiana’s newest online recycling resource: indianarecycles.org. This new resource provides a host of recycling and waste reduction information including recycling drop-off locations throughout Indiana via a simple search tool. Please check out the indianarecycles.org announcement here.

We are also pleased to report that Kim Jeffery, President and CEO of Nestle Waters North America, will be our conference key note speaker on May 11. Mr. Jeffery supports a producer responsibility policy model to increase recycling rates in the U.S., in particular to achieve his company’s goal of recycling 60% of all PET bottles in the U.S. by 2018. We look forward to an interesting presentation and to the policy dialogue that will certainly follow.

We also have several new exhibitors lined up for the conference this year. If you have not registered to attend and/or exhibit, please do so soon before the early bird rate expires in a few short weeks! See details below.

February saw a flurry of activity at the Statehouse on bills the IRC was following, however, at this time it appears that none of those bills will move forward this year. We will continue to track all legislative activity of interest and will provide an update in our next newsletter.

Finally, the IRC is pleased to welcome our newest board member, Kevin Corcoran, Program Director at the Lumina Foundation. Welcome, Kevin!

Best regards,

Carey

Carey Hamilton

Don’t Forget About our Public Space Recycling Grant!

If you are a public entity or know of one that needs a boost to its recycling program, don’t forget that the IRC has received a grant from Alcoa to create a public space recycling bin grant program.

The majority of the grant will be utilized to provide recycling bins for public venues including college and university athletic venues, publicly-owned athletic venues, publicly-owned golf courses, state parks and municipal parks across the state.

The application and more information may be found by clicking here. The deadline for application is March 31.

Sponsor Spotlight:

Walmart

Walmart is using “The 7 Rs of Sustainable Packaging” to achieve its goal of becoming packaging-neutral by 2025, which means all packaging recovered or recycled at its stores and Sam’s Clubs will be equal to the amount of packaging used by the products on its shelves.

In 2006, the Packaging Network announced its desirable principles of sustainable packaging to suppliers through the “7 Rs,” which are:

Remove: Eliminate unnecessary packaging, boxes or layers, and harmful materials.

Reduce: “Right-size” packages, optimize material strength, and design packages appropriately for contents and merchandising requirements.

Reuse: All transport packaging will be reused or recycled by 2011 through improved pallets and reusable plastic containers (RPCs).

Renew(able): Use materials made of renewable resources as measured using ASTM D6866, or select biodegradable materials that meet ASTM D6400 or ASTM D6868.

Recycle(able): Use materials made of the highest recycled content without compromising quality, including post-consumer recycled material where appropriate. Components should be chosen based on recycle-ability, with a goal of increasing the municipal recycling rate to 35% by 2011.

Revenue: Achieve all principles at cost parity or cost savings, which requires a supply chain approach.

Read: Become knowledgeable about sustainability and how suppliers play a part.

IRC Member Directory

The IRC recently created a web-based member directory. The directory was created to allow website visitors to more easily learn about the services our members provide and it will allow our members to be recognized year-round as IRC supporters.

If you are an IRC member organization and have not already taken advantage of this opportunity and wish to do so, please contact Monica Brase.

And yet another directory for recyclers…

The Indiana Department of Environmental Management is identifying companies to include in a directory of businesses that recycle or market recyclable materials. The directory will be located at Recycle Indiana.

The Indiana Recyclable Materials Market Directory (RMMD) is a list of Indiana brokers, processors and manufacturers that purchase or accept volumes of recyclable materials. The directory lists company information and materials accepted.

For more information or to get your company information included in the directory, contact Steven Boggs at 800-988-7901 or click here.
